Employee Neck and Back Pain at Work

A clinical service for employers managing neck and back pain across their workforce. We identify the underlying causes, correct contributing workplace factors onsite, and create a plan to help prevent the problem from returning.

Trusted By

We support HR teams, occupational health leaders, and operations managers across San Francisco, the Bay Area, Seattle, Spokane, and Coeur d’Alene in identifying and addressing workplace factors contributing to employee neck and back pain.

Why Neck and Back Pain Keeps Returning

Neck and back pain are among the most commonly reported musculoskeletal complaints in office and hybrid workplaces. Most organizations respond reactively. An employee reports discomfort, is referred to a physician or physical therapist, and then returns to the same workstation setup that contributed to the issue in the first place.

When the source of the problem is not addressed, the cycle continues. Symptoms worsen over time, sick days increase, and costs to the organization grow. Our Workplace Ergonomics Program is designed to break that cycle by identifying and correcting the physical and environmental factors that contribute to neck and back pain before they become long-term problems.

Who This Service Is For

This service is designed for employers already seeing neck and back pain become a workforce issue. That may include frequent complaints from desk-based employees, recurring short-term sick leave related to musculoskeletal conditions, or workers’ compensation claims connected to posture or workstation setup.

It is also ideal for organizations that want to reduce risk before it becomes a larger operational cost. High screen-time roles, sedentary work patterns, and improperly configured workstations all increase the likelihood of neck and back pain developing over time.

This service is a strong fit for organizations with:

  • Employees regularly reporting neck stiffness, upper back tension, or lower back pain
  • Roles involving prolonged sitting or static posture without regular movement breaks
  • Workstations that have not been clinically evaluated or adjusted
  • A history of MSK-related sick leave or workers’ compensation claims
  • Employees returning to work after neck or back-related absences
  • No current clinical support for workplace musculoskeletal health

What Causes Neck and Back Pain at Work

Work-related neck and back pain rarely comes from a single issue. It usually develops from multiple contributing factors that are often overlooked because they are never properly assessed. The difference between a wellness initiative and a clinical evaluation is that a clinician can identify the actual causes rather than offering generalized advice that may not fit the individual.

Contributing factors we assess and address:

  • Monitor height and viewing distance creating sustained forward head posture
  • Lumbar support and seat depth that do not match the employee’s body type or sitting habits
  • Limited postural variation throughout the workday increasing cumulative spinal stress
  • Muscle imbalance and movement patterns that worsen existing workstation problems

How the Service Works

We come directly to your workplace, assess the affected employees, and make corrections during the same visit.

The process:

  1. You share the roles and employees most affected, along with office location and team size
  2. We review the work environment and recommend the most appropriate assessment format
  3. We conduct onsite clinician-led individual assessments
  4. Each employee receives hands-on corrections, movement guidance, and a written summary
  5. You receive an optional findings report with recommendations for follow-up care or ongoing support

When assessments identify risks that require additional intervention, findings can connect to our Corporate MSK Risk Reduction Program for ongoing support, monitoring, and preventive care.

What Changes After Clinical Intervention

Addressing neck and back pain at the source produces measurable improvements. Employees who receive clinical assessment and workstation correction often improve more quickly than those referred externally without workplace evaluation. Organizations that address environmental contributors also tend to see lower recurrence rates.

Employers commonly see:

  • Fewer reported neck and back pain complaints across teams
  • Reduced MSK-related sick days and shorter absence periods
  • Lower workers’ compensation costs related to posture and workstation injuries
  • Faster return to full productivity for employees recovering from neck or back pain
  • Greater employee confidence in the organization’s commitment to physical health
  • Documented clinical findings to support HR and occupational health reporting

Our clinicians bring hands-on musculoskeletal expertise that allows them to identify contributing factors a standard ergonomic review may overlook. That level of precision helps create long-term improvement rather than temporary relief.

Part of a Wider MSK Approach

Neck and back pain at work are often symptoms of a larger musculoskeletal risk issue. Clinical intervention provides immediate support, while addressing the conditions that contribute to pain helps prevent future episodes.

The Corporate MSK Risk Reduction Program builds on clinical findings with ongoing onsite care, movement coaching, and injury tracking over time. For organizations managing workstation-related risk across multiple locations, our location-specific ergonomic assessment services are available throughout the Bay Area, San Francisco, Seattle, Spokane, and Coeur d’Alene.

Organizations operating in commercial buildings can also offer clinical MSK support through tenant wellness programs or conference wellness lounge activations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is neck and back pain at work always caused by poor workstation setup?
Workstation setup is one of the most common contributing factors in desk-based roles, but it is rarely the only cause. Muscle imbalance, movement habits, stress, and lack of regular movement throughout the day can also contribute. A clinical assessment evaluates the full picture, not just the desk setup.
Our clinicians are trained to recognize when symptoms may indicate an underlying medical issue that requires additional evaluation or referral. When necessary, we recommend appropriate next steps rather than treating symptoms without addressing the root cause.
Yes. Return-to-work planning is part of our service. We can assess the employee’s workstation and work environment before they return and recommend adjustments that help reduce the risk of reinjury.
Physical therapy typically focuses on treating the individual in a clinic setting. This service evaluates and corrects the workplace environment contributing to the problem. Both can be valuable, but without addressing workstation setup and daily work patterns, treatment outcomes are often temporary.
Individual sessions generally last 20 to 25 minutes. A full onsite day can usually accommodate 12 to 16 employees, depending on travel, scheduling, and setup requirements. Larger teams can be scheduled over multiple visits.
Yes. Each employee receives a written post-assessment summary. Employers can also receive an optional findings overview outlining identified risk factors, corrections made, and recommended next steps for the team.
